Across Canada, March is National Brain Awareness Month. As always, the staff of Cariati Law supports any efforts to help prevent brain injury. In recognition of this health awareness campaign, the Saskatchewan Royal Purple Association (SRPA) and the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association (SBIA) recently held a media conference to help educate the public about brain injuries.
About the Conference
Attendees and supporters discussed brain health, brain damage, the increased awareness of concussions, and the importance of safety measures designed to lower the risk of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs). The discussion included the importance of wearing a helmet, as one of the leading causes of brain injury is accidents involving motor vehicles—including cars, snowmobiles, and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs).
Local Resources
Closer to home, the Ontario Working Group of Neurological Health Charities Canada (NHCC) works to determine how Ontario can move forward with strategies to address issues regarding brain health and safety. The organizations that comprise the NHCC represent people with brain diseases, disorders, and injuries in Canada. The coalition provides advocacy, education, and research on health and safety to improve the lives of people with brain conditions.
Be Safe
Every year thousands of individuals are victims of head trauma that result in Traumatic Brain Injury. Motor-vehicle accidents—in particular those involving pedestrians or cyclists—are one of the leading causes of TBIs. Other common causes of potential Traumatic Brain Injury can include:
- Slip-and-Fall Accidents
- Birth or Childhood Injuries
- Sports-Related Accidents
These brain injuries very often cause medical, physical, and emotional challenges that can last a lifetime. With this in mind, preventive safety measures—including wearing a helmet while cycling or participating in contact sports—take on vital importance.
